Officer-involved shooting in St. Pete, suspect on the loose

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (970 WFLA) – St. Petersburg Police said they are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting on the at a convenience store on the 1400 block of 49th Street South.

Police said at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, officers from the street crimes unit spotted a reported stolen vehicle in the parking of the convenience store.

Police said at least three unmarked police units pulled into the lot with the intention of stopping the car and apprehending the driver who was seen leaving the store. As they approached, police said the driver ran to the car, got inside, and backed out at a high rate of speed with sufficient force to drive up and over the top of one of the unmarked cruisers where there was an officer inside of it.

Right after backing up, police said the suspect then pulled forward driving towards another officer and hit him around the leg/foot area. Police said another officer, seeing the driver’s actions, fired multiple rounds at the suspect vehicle. Then, police said the suspect's car headed toward the parking lot exit and hit two other undercover police cars, one of which was occupied by another officer. The suspect got out of the lot and headed eastbound on 15th Avenue South.

St. Pete Police said they haven’t been able to find the suspect vehicle and it remains at large.

Police said one officer suffered minor injuries, but did not require medical treatment.

Police said they also don’t know if the suspect suffered any wounds from the shooting and his identity also remains unknown at this time.

St. Pete Police released the following description:

-b/m in his 20's 6'1", last seen a black hoody and black jeans.

-the suspect vehicle is black 2006 Mazda 6 with a FL tag number of G142LV. The tag is stolen and is not registered to the car. It should have rear end damage.

UPDATE: Police said the car was found at 8 a.m. Thursday morning on 85th Avenue North and 5th Street with bullet holes in it. They also said there is no evidence the suspect was shot.
